Brexiters Routed In Salzburg

It had to happen. Sooner or later someone was going to truly stand up to the Brexiters. Theresa May made the first attempt at this recently, but it was nowhere near enough. Since Prime Minister May has been unable to do it, the task has fallen to the leaders of the EU and it’s Member States.

To my mind there have been two very important aspects to Brexit situation that the Brexiters tend to overlook. Firstly, the EU gets a say in the final deal too. For all the back and forth about “what Britain wants”, there has been precious little consideration about what Europe will accept and ratify in it’s national parliaments.

Secondly, in a negotiation of this nature, both sides can play brinkmanship if they wish. Today in Salzburg Europe’s leaders stepped up and thrust their swords into the body Brexit. As only true politicians can, they did not stab the project in the back, no they looked Theresa May in the eye as they did it.

Exposing Brexit Mythology
Several of the key arguments made at the referendum were totally debunked today. Anyone truly following this has known the EU’s position for years, but today there will be many Brits with a new perspective. Let’s cover a few of them, taken from this reporting.

1. German car manufacturers can’t let Britain leave without a deal. They will force Angela Merkel’s hand.

Angela Merkel: “The EU27 was “united that, in the matter of the single market, there can be no compromises”, she said. “No one can belong to the single market if they are not part of the single market.”

2. The EU will have to meet us halfway in the negotiations.

Angela Merkel: “The EU27 was “united that, in the matter of the single market, there can be no compromises”, she said. “No one can belong to the single market if they are not part of the single market.”

3. Of course Britain will get a deal. Britain is too important to the EU for us to leave.

Angela Merkel: “The EU27 was “united that, in the matter of the single market, there can be no compromises”, she said. “No one can belong to the single market if they are not part of the single market.”

4. There will be a massive Brexit dividend.

Emmanuel Macron: “Those who explain that we can easily live without Europe, that everything is going to be all right, and that it’s going to bring a lot of money home are liars”.

5. We can have our cake and eat it.

Donald Tusk: “It must be clear that there are some issues where we are not ready to compromise and first of all this is our fundamental freedoms and single market“.

6. This will be the easiest trade negotiation in history.

Donald Tusk: “Without an October grand finale, in a positive sense of this word, there is no reason to organise a special meeting in November”.

What Now?
Today clearly kills off the Chequers plan even though everyone except the Prime Minister had already accepted that it was dead. The arguments since the announcement of the Chequers plan have proved that there is no appetite in Britain for a Norway-style arrangement, thus the middle ground is now removed from the field of battle. The remaining options are to stay in or crash out.

Today’s strong words will probably embolden the Brexiters as party conference season approaches. This could cause Theresa May many, many problems. It is possible that there will now be a leadership challenge or a general election – neither of which would actually solve this problem in the remaining months. Both options would heighten the likelyhood of a disorderly Brexit.

Strap yourself in. It’s going to get much rougher.

  1. Only 28% of the UK youth voted in the 1st referendum in 2016. That would be much different now that the youth has learned about the consequences. Brexit debates have woken them up and made them politically engaged. Now let’s make sure that the 2nd referendum will happen, by joining People’s Vote March on 20th October in London and Liverpool to be such a massive event demanding a 2nd referendum. And let’s organize street marches every month in all major UK cities with lot’s of attractive music so that the last ignorant youth will also be stimulated to come out and vote, knowing that about 75% of the UK youth is pro-European and in favor of REMAIN…
